Box gutter and slate-roof work
EPDM relining of a sound built-in gutter is $35–$60 per foot; copper relining $90–$160 per foot; rebuilding rotted gutter boards and framing adds $40–$120 per foot where it's needed. A 30-foot rowhouse front is usually $1,300–$2,400; a full wraparound on a large four-square with rot at the corners is $6,000–$12,000. Gutter guards
Aluminum screen $5–$9 per foot; stainless micro-mesh $10–$18 per foot; reverse-curve $18–$30 per foot. On a 160-foot home that's roughly $800–$2,900 depending on type, and cheapest when done with new gutters. The gutter guards page matches guard type to tree.
Gutter cleaning

What moves the price
- The hillside. A house with a one-story front and a three-story back needs staging on the downhill side. That's the single most common reason a Pittsburgh quote is higher than the national figure.
- Stories. Two-story work costs 15–25% more for the setup; three-story rowhouses more again.
- Roof type. Slate and metal need different hangers and slower work. Shingle is the baseline.
- Corners. Every inside and outside corner is a miter. A hip roof with ten corners costs more per foot than a plain gable.
- Fascia condition. The most common surprise on a 1960s house. We check it before quoting.
- Gutter size. Six-inch is about 20% more than five-inch and worth it on big roofs and under sliding snow.
- Color. White, brown and the common trim colors are stock; a specialty color adds a week and a small coil surcharge.
A worked example
A two-story brick colonial in Ross Township with 190 feet of gutter, five downspouts, a hip roof with eight corners, and one soft corner of fascia: 6-inch .032 aluminum with 3x4 downspouts at $13.50 a foot is $2,565; twelve feet of fascia at $12 is $144; extensions on five downspouts at $40 are $200. Total about $2,900, one day, old gutters hauled away. The same house quoted at $1,800 is almost certainly 5-inch .027 metal on spike hangers with 2x3 downspouts — the system you're replacing, installed again.
Reading a Pittsburgh gutter quote
Ask for the gauge (.032, not .027), the hanger type and spacing (hidden screw hangers, 24 inches or closer), the downspout size, and whether haul-away and fascia are included. Ask for the contractor's PA registration number; any job over $500 has to be on a written contract that shows it. Is it cheaper to repair or replace gutters?
Repair if the gutters are aluminum, under about 20 years old, and the trouble is in a few places. Replace if they're sectional, rusting steel, or more than a third of the runs need work — patching those adds up to a replacement without the warranty. Box gutters are a separate calculation: relining a sound trough is almost always cheaper than converting.
Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage to gutters in Pennsylvania?
Often, for sudden damage — a gutter torn off by ice or a fallen limb — but not for wear, and not for the clog that caused the ice in the first place. We document the damage with photos and a written scope. Check whether your policy has a separate wind and hail deductible; small gutter claims may fall under it.
